Shuya Yang holds a Master’s in TCSOL from Shenzhen University, is a native Mandarin speaker, and passionately helps non-native learners master Chinese. She shares her experiences to show that, with patience and proper methods, Chinese proficiency is achievable.
Through internships and part-time roles, she has guided learners in Chinese character recognition, vocabulary building, and pronunciation. Her strengths include using etymology and character structure, real-life scenarios for vocabulary, and tone-focused practice for pronunciation—all designed to boost learners’ listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.
Beyond TCSOL, she is interested in how Chinese interacts with other Asian languages (e.g., loanwords in Japanese/Korean, Mandarin-Cantonese differences). She also studies basic English and Japanese to better understand learners’ challenges and adapt her teaching accordingly.
In her free time, she loves exploring Chinese cuisine—Sichuan’s mapo tofu, Guangdong’s dim sum, and Shanxi’s noodles are among her favorites. This hobby allows her to bring cultural examples into her classes, making them more engaging.
