CW-PREP Program


The Child Welfare Prepare, Retain, Engage and Partner Program (CW-PREP) is a collaborative partnership between the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services and the undergraduate social work program at Western Kentucky University. CW-PREP is designed to prepare and support future child welfare professionals by combining academic excellence, hands-on training, financial support, and a direct pathway to employment. Graduates are equipped to serve Kentucky’s children and families with confidence, competence, and compassion—starting on day one.

CW-PREP reflects WKU’s commitment to student success, workforce development, and community impact. Through academic excellence and hands-on learning, students graduate prepared to lead, serve, and make a lasting difference across the Commonwealth.

 

CW-Prep provides comprehensive academic, financial, and professional support, including:

  • Financial Support
    • Fully paid in-state tuition for up to four semesters
    • $1,400 stipend per semester for books, living expenses and program-related travel
  • Academic & Professional Preparation
    • Advanced, specialized course work in child welfare
    • Targeted training experiences aligned with state child welfare practice
    • Professional development and networking opportunities 
  • Career Pathway
    • Intensive field internship with your local Department for Community Based Services (DCBS)
    • Priority consideration for employment with DCBS after graduation
    • Competitive salary and strong state benefits

Participation in CW-PREP includes a contractual commitment with the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services. Requirements include:

  • Application for employment with DCBS at least 30 days prior to graduation
  • Acceptance of a position in the Social Service Worker series
  • Two (2) years of continuous employment with DCBS following graduation
  • Completion of two required CW-PREP courses (SWRK 450 & SWRK 451)
  • Attendance at two required retreats per year
  • Participation in mandatory trainings
  • Completion of the required field internship with the Office of Protection and Permanency
  • A minimum grade of “B” or higher in all CW-PREP and field courses
  • Willingness to relocate within Kentucky based on job availability

⚠️ Failure to meet program obligations may result in repayment of funds received.

Applicants must:

  • Be a full-time social work major at the time of application
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 in social work courses
  • Earn no less than a “B” in required CW-PREP and field courses
  • Not be a current employee of the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services
  • Be willing to work for DCBS for two (2) years after graduation
  • Demonstrate a positive, professional, and compassionate commitment to working with children and families in crisis

 

The CW-Prep Journey

Year One

Foundation & Preparation

Students engage in structured learning experiences designed to prepare them for child welfare practice, including:

  • Targeted academic coursework
  • Child welfare–specific training opportunities
  • Professional identity and network development

Year Two

Mentorship & Growth

Students continue core program components while also participating in:

  • A peer-mentor initiative connecting students with experienced child welfare professionals
  • Advanced skill development and leadership preparation

Post-WKU

Graduation & Transition

As students approach graduation, CW-PREP supports the transition into the workforce through:

  • Priority consideration for employment with DCBS
  • Continued early-career guidance and support

  • Job coaching and counseling to address challenges early
