How to Earn The Best Grade

Outside of Class

Get into a before- and after-class rhythm to stay current and well-prepared, so you do not need to cram.

General rule of thumb: Spend 2-3 hours outside class for every hour you spend in class.

Review, edit, clarify, and elaborate your notes within 24 hours of the lecture, again a week later, and again a month later—even if for just a few minutes. Review the notes from the previous class and any assigned reading, and ask the instructor to clarify any points as needed. Review your exams, especially if you did not perform as well as you'd have liked. You may need to make an appointment or visit during office hours to do so.

Use All Your Resources.

Use all the tools you have been provided (e.g., e-text resources, review sessions, help desks, department tutoring, etc.).

Manage Your Time & Plan

During Class

Showing up to class is only half the battle. To get the most out of lecture or lab, follow these tips below.

Try to get to class early. Listen in class and stay engaged. Sit in a position where you can pay attention best.

Introduce yourself to your professor. Say "hi" to your neighbors. Make a GroupMe with peers around you for study groups. Take good notes!

Close Your Laptop.

Research shows that WRITING your notes (vs. typing) is best for memory retention.

Office Hours

Instructors & professors WANT you to come to office hours. It is never a bother, and you never need an appointment.

Be sure to introduce yourself and come prepared with specific questions or issues to discuss. Take notes (on paper) during the meeting. If you can't meet during office hours, email your instructor and ask for an appointment.

Use Office Hours Effectively

Not sure where their office is?

Use the WKU search bar and look them up by name. This will take you to their faculty page, which will include their email and office location.
