International Travel Cybersecurity
International travel is essential for many WKU employees, but it also introduces risks
to your data, devices, and accounts. Potential threats include device loss or theft,
unauthorized access, data exposure, and account compromise. This site provides resources
and guidance to support informed preparation and promote secure practices for international
travel.
Before Your Trip
- Bring only what you need. Limit travel to essential devices and remove any sensitive or unnecessary data.
- Secure your devices. Make sure all devices have full-disk encryption, updated software, antivirus protection, and strong passwords.
- Prepare for authentication. Set up a mobile-friendly MFA method (e.g., Microsoft Authenticator with offline backup) and consider a backup hardware token like a YubiKey.
- Use a loaner if possible. For high-risk travel, request a university-issued loaner device. If using personal devices, ensure they are free of restricted or sensitive WKU data.
While Traveling
- Keep devices with you. Do not check them in luggage or leave them unattended in hotel rooms.
- Connect securely. Avoid public or unsecured Wi-Fi. Always use the WKU VPN when accessing university systems.
- Limit connectivity features. Turn off auto-connect for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and location services when not in use.
- Avoid unknown devices. Don’t use public computers, charging stations, or USB drives you didn’t bring with you.
After Your Trip
- Scan your devices. Run a full antivirus scan. If you traveled to a high-risk region, consider re-imaging the device.
- Reset your credentials. Change important passwords and check your account activity for any suspicious behavior.
- Report any issues. Contact WKU ITS immediately if you suspect your device was compromised.
