Scholarships
Below is a list of national scholarships available to military veterans and their dependents.
If you are interested in any of these scholarships, please contact the organization with any questions or concerns.
In 2002, in the aftermath of the September 11th attacks, Pat Tillman left his NFL career and turned down a multi-million dollar contract with the Arizona Cardinals to enlist and serve his country as an Army Ranger. A role model of courage and patriotism, he served several combat tours but was killed in a firefight in Afghanistan on April 22, 2004.
The mission of the Pat Tillman Foundation is to invest in Veterans and their spouses through educational scholarships and to build a diverse community of leaders committed to serving others. The Military Scholar Program offers financial assistance to Servicemembers, Veterans, and their spouses to cover academic and/or living expenses while in school. You must pursue an undergraduate, graduate or post-graduate degree as a full-time student at a public or private, 4-year U.S.-based accredited institution to qualify. For more information on application and eligibility requirements please go to The Pat Tillman Foundation.
The Scholarship is a program of the Kentucky Sons of The American Legion, administered by Independence Squadron 275 in northern Kentucky. The Scholarship is named in honor of John H. Keys of Covington, Kentucky, a Korean War veteran and American Legion member who died of cancer in 1990. The Sons of The American Legion (S.A.L.) is an affiliated organization of The American Legion, established in 1932 and composed of direct male descendants of Legionnaires and direct male descendants of deceased, honorably-discharged veterans of the U.S. Armed Services who served during wartime. The amount of individual awards varies based on donations received and the recommendation of the Scholarship Review Committee.
As noted on the form, applications are accepted on an ongoing basis year round. Scholarship grants are awarded twice a year and announced on May 1st and November 1st. Scholarship grants are awarded in the Spring and Fall, contingent upon the successful applicants' enrollment at their institution the following semester. Financial Aid officers will be requested to verify the winning applicants' enrollment for the following semester (i.e. awards announced in November will require verification of the student's enrollment for the following Spring semester, etc.)
Completed applications and required documentation must be mailed to the John Keys Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 18791, Erlanger, KY 41018-0791. The Scholarship Review Committee will be meeting in mid October to select winners, who will be announced on November 1. Applications received prior to October 15 will be reviewed and considered at that meeting.
Interested applicants can find eligibility requirements and the link for the online application at http://www.thanksusa.org/scholarship-program.html. Deadlines will be listed on the website.
