WKU Teaching Fundamentals for Part-time Faculty

Winter 2026 Cohort (January 5th - January 18th)

WKU Teaching Fundamentals is a two-week professional development experience designed specifically for part-time faculty who want to strengthen their teaching skills and create engaging, student-centered learning environments.
Through a series of interactive content, the online course will cover essential teaching strategies for both face-to-face and online learning environments. In addition, the training will provide practical, just-in-time resources to guide part-time faculty in preparing their course(s) for a strong start, implementing effective instructional practices, accessing helpful institutional resources, and managing key end-of-semester tasks.

Topics Include

  • Foundations of Effective Teaching – core principles that promote student success
  • Syllabus Essentials – creating a clear, organized, and student-friendly syllabus
  • Communicating with Purpose – fostering clarity and accountability
  • Building Community – fostering presence, engagement and connection with students
  • Assessment & Grading Strategies – using effective  methods to measure learning

The training wraps up with an annotated syllabus project, where you’ll apply what you’ve learned by creating or refining a syllabus that highlights intentional choices in structure, communication, and assessment.

By the end of the two weeks, you’ll walk away with:
  • A polished syllabus ready for your next course
  • Practical teaching tools and ideas you can implement immediately
  • Greater confidence in your role as a WKU instructor

Whether new to teaching or looking for a refresher, this course provides an opportunity for part-time instructors to explore and refine their teaching philosophy while receiving WKU-specific support
