WKU Libraries is excited to announce the appointment of Heather Beirne (pronounced Burn) as the new Library Public Services Chair. Beirne brings 16 years of experience as a librarian to WKU, having most recently served as the Director of Learning & Engagement at Texas A&M University Libraries.
Before her time at Texas A&M, Beirne worked at Eastern Kentucky University, where she was the Director of Teaching & Learning. Throughout her career, she has developed expertise in serving the unique needs of regional comprehensive universities.
"Student success and empowerment have always been the driving forces of my career," Beirne shared. "I am committed to the mission of Kentucky's regional universities, and my experience at Eastern Kentucky University has shaped my passion for developing library services that empower students, especially first-generation college students."
Beirne's background includes providing leadership for information literacy instruction, outreach, and research assistance programs. She has a strong record of collaborating with faculty across disciplines to develop information literacy curricula and has expertise in the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy.
In her new role, Beirne plans to build relationships to create a campus culture where information literacy is integrated into the academic experience. She sees the library as a partner in the university's mission, working with faculty and staff to equip students with research and critical thinking skills. As Beirne states, she believes the work of her department is "about building relationships that amplify educational impact." She emphasizes that when librarians and classroom faculty "work as partners, we create learning environments where students receive support that extends beyond a single classroom or library session.”
We look forward to seeing the positive impact of Heather Beirne’s leadership and collaborative vision at WKU Libraries. Please join us in welcoming her as our new Library Public Services Chair.
