"Baritone Zachary Coates is a lecturer in music in voice, teaching applied voice and graduate courses in Song Literature. He received a Bachelor of Music degree from Westminster Choir College and both Master and Doctor of Music degrees from Indiana University, where he was a student of Andreas Poulimenos.

A fervent interpreter of song, Dr. Coates has given recitals across the United States and internationally. His academic interests include the Kunstballaden of Carl Loewe, the intersection of poetry, music, and the visual arts in France at the turn of the 20th century, and the wide range of diverse and powerful voices crafting art song in America in the last few decades and today. His culminating doctoral project, A Practical Handbook for Teaching Undergraduate Song Literature, is a guide to assist Song Literature teachers in adapting core undergraduate curriculum into a format that will fit their unique perspectives and institutional requirements.

Although he specializes in song, Coates’s vocal studies have included Stanislavski Technique, and he has performed with opera companies across the country including Michigan Opera Theater, Opera Philadelphia, Spoleto Festival USA, and Opera North. He has also been involved with the groundbreaking and inclusive work of Opera MODO, both on stage and behind the scenes. Roles have included Don Giovanni (Don Giovanni), Count Almaviva (Le Nozze di Figaro), Guglielmo and Don Alphonso (Così fan tutte), Sid (Albert Herring), Balstrode (Peter Grimes), Sergeant Sulpice (La fille du régiment), and Dulcamara (L’elisir d’amore). His concert performances include oratorios with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.

During his graduate studies at Indiana University, Dr. Coates was a recipient of the Georgina Joshi International Fellowship, which allowed him to spend three months in England and Germany on a self-constructed intensive program of lessons and coachings, including an extended period of lessons with Sir Thomas Allen. Coates was also honored to work with legendary song coach and pianist Dalton Baldwin on several occasions before his passing."

“Helping Students Develop an Achievement Oriented Attitude: What They Believe Determines Whether They Achieve”

Students’ experiences shape their beliefs about themselves, their tasks, and achievement more broadly. These beliefs, in turn, influence whether and how they pursue success. This session will share research-based strategies developed over the past two decades to increase student motivation. We will explore the value of providing students with choices in their learning, building their confidence in their ability to succeed, and aligning instruction with their interests. When students perceive a task as meaningful and believe they have the skills and support to succeed, they are more likely to engage in self-regulated learning and apply effective academic strategies. These ideas will be examined through the lens of the three legs of talent development: access to advanced content, inductive learning with depth and complexity, and authentic, interest-based learning opportunities. Together, these elements foster curiosity, encourage academic risk-taking, and cultivate a lifelong enthusiasm for learning.

Join us for the first event of this year’s PCAL Cultural Enhancement Series on Thursday, October 16th, at 7 PM in the Jody Richards Hall Auditorium as we host award-winning journalist, Caitlin Dickerson!

More than 80 million people have been forced from their homes worldwide by conflicts, climate change, persecution or destitution—a number that grows every day. From Warsaw, Poland, which has accepted more Ukrainian refugees fleeing war than any city in the world, to dangerous camps in Northern Mexico where asylum seekers wait to enter the United States, Dickerson’s on-the-ground reporting highlights the vulnerability and complexity of life on the move, which often exacerbates pre-existing inequality. As she wrote for The Atlantic, “Being forced from one’s home causes irrevocable harm to anyone who experiences it… Some find stability—and, if buffeted by the right passport, family connections, or luck, can even find greater prosperity. But that is no replacement for what they have lost.”

In this powerful talk, Dickerson shares stories from the frontlines of global displacement, offering a rare, human-centered view of the migration crisis. She challenges audiences to confront the moral and political questions surrounding national borders, identity, and belonging. Listeners will come away with a deeper understanding of the lived realities behind headlines, the systems that shape migration policy, and the urgent need for compassionate, informed responses in a rapidly shifting world.

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Peabody Award, and Edward R. Murrow Award, Caitlin Dickerson engages audiences on the power of journalism as a check against systemic inequality, telling stories of remarkable resilience and hope from the front lines of the world’s refugee crisis.

Super Saturdays encourages students in grades 1 – 6 who are of high ability or have high interest in a topic to pursue their passions outside the regular classroom. Through a minds-on, hands-on approach to learning, students explore and investigate such areas as math, art, science, history, writing, music, and performance under the thoughtful guidance of experienced teachers and in the company of enthusiastic, like-minded peers. Each year, over 1000 students enjoy the benefits of Super Saturdays.

The Center offers two different three-week sessions of Super Saturdays each year. The first session is offered in the early fall and the second in the winter. Courses are listed by grade levels and are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. When registering, you will submit the student’s top three class choices.  If the top (#1) choice is filled, they will be placed in the next available class. Students will be in the same class for all three Saturdays.
