Discover the science of sports at our two-day Sport Science Camp at Western Kentucky University! Open to both middle and high school students, this camp offers a unique blend of hands-on activities and expert instruction from our Exercise Science faculty, who bring real-world experience from the fitness industry and athletics. Participants will receive a personalized assessment of their athletic abilities, uncovering strengths and areas for improvement, while learning techniques to elevate their performance. Learning Objectives
During this camp, participants will engage in a comprehensive learning experience designed to enhance their understanding of key concepts in sports science. The camp aims to cover fundamental principles of exercise physiology, biomechanics, and nutrition, providing athletes with valuable insights into optimizing their performance. Participants will also delve into injury prevention strategies, and recovery techniques. Through a combination of lectures, hands-on practical sessions, and interactive discussions, athletes will gain a deeper appreciation for the science behind their training regimens, empowering them to make informed decisions that positively impact their athletic endeavors. This camp serves as a unique opportunity for high school athletes to bridge the gap between theory and practice, fostering a holistic approach to sports performance under the guidance of experienced professionals in the field.
Tentative Itinerary
Day 1: Data Collection, Analyzing Details, and Studying Data Analytics
- Importance of a warmup
- Test various constructs such as body composition, agility, strength, power, speed and acceleration, local muscular endurance and more
- Importance of collecting data and applying it to sports
- Lunch at Fresh Foods
- After-lunch fun activity
Day 2: Learning to Interpret & ApplyData to Real World Sport Science Scenarios (hands-on application of the data we collected from Day 1)
- Create versions of a warm-up based on what was learned the first day
- Learn to analyze our own data
- Compare our own data to averages
- Use data to analyze specific athletes
- Learn why some things are more important than others
