Frequently Asked Questions

It's never too early to begin utilizing the Career Development Center. We offer a range of programs and resources that support students from their first year through graduation and even after, as we continue to assist alumni. Encourage your student to visit or reach out to our office as soon as possible, so we can help set them on the right path.

It's completely normal for students to be undecided about their major or to want to change it. In fact, many students explore different fields before finding the right fit. Our career development team offers guidance to help your student explore their interests and strengths, and we can support them through the process of switching majors if needed. As long as they stay proactive about their academic and career goals, they can stay on track and make the most of their time in school. We offer resources such as career assessments, internship opportunities, and one-on-one counseling to ensure they have the tools to succeed, regardless of their major.

One of the most popular tools on the Career Development Center website is SteppingBlocks. This resource is an excellent way to connect various majors to common career paths, highlighting typical employers who hire graduates in those fields. It also offers strategies to enhance career opportunities and provides a collection of useful links for further career exploration. Additionally, it's important to help your student understand that many career paths are shaped by skills and experiences gained outside the classroom. A single major can lead to a variety of careers, and most careers can be pursued with different academic backgrounds. Academic and career exploration coaches are available to guide students through their major and career decisions during one-on-one appointments.

Many career fields are currently experiencing strong demand and are expected to grow in the coming years. Some of the most in-demand fields include:

  • Technology (Software Development, Cybersecurity, Data Science, AI/ML)
  • Healthcare (Nursing, Physical Therapy, Medical Technology, Healthcare Administration)
  • Green Energy and Sustainability (Renewable Energy, Environmental Science, Urban Planning)
  • Business & Finance (Financial Analysts, Marketing, Supply Chain Management, Human Resources)
  • Engineering (Electrical, Civil, Mechanical, and Environmental Engineering)
  • Skilled Trades (Electricians, Plumbers, Construction Management)
  • Education and Social Services (Social Workers, Teachers, Counselors)

At WKU, students can easily find on-campus employment opportunities through Handshake, our online job board. Students can log in to their Handshake account, search for jobs, and apply directly through the platform. We also recommend students attend career fairs, networking events, and utilize the Career Development Center for additional support in finding on-campus positions that align with their skills and interests.

In addition to academic success, gaining hands-on experience is crucial for career development. Students should consider internships, part-time jobs, volunteer opportunities, research projects, and leadership roles in clubs or organizations. These experiences help develop transferable skills like communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and time management, which are highly valued by employers. Additionally, engaging in networking opportunities and attending professional development workshops can further enhance their skill set and resume.

Scheduling an appointment and visiting our office will provide your student with the opportunity to explore the Handshake system for internship postings, apply online, and engage in on-campus recruiting events. They can also meet with their career coach for guidance on preparing for and searching for internships. Additionally, we organize several campus-wide career fairs where students can connect with employers offering potential opportunities.

With thoughtful planning, internships do not have to delay graduation. Many can be completed during the summer or on a part-time basis throughout the academic year, with some available as full-time positions during the semester.

It's never too early to start planning! We recommend students begin their job search at least 6-12 months before graduation. For internships, students should start looking and applying as early as possible—many companies recruit a semester or more in advance. If your student is interested in a full-time position after graduation, they should start exploring options during their junior year and refine their search throughout senior year.
