Evolution is the foundation of all of Biology; it underpins the entire discipline and is integrally associated with each concentration.
You can pursue evolutionary tracks in any concentration. This path is located in the IB Concentration because a good foundation in the broad, general principles of biology is beneficial.
- Evolutionary biology careers span various fields, including research, education, and conservation. Individuals with expertise in evolutionary biology can work in academia, government, non-profit organizations, and the private sector.
- Potential job roles include research scientists, professors, conservation biologists, and environmental consultants.

Science Writer. Science Writer: Describe advancements in science, engineering, medicine, and environmental science. They explain the impact these discoveries have on the lives of average individuals research and work for labs, universities as a grant writer, the military, science journals, magazines, and textbooks companies.

Technical writers. Prepare instruction manuals, how-to guides, journal articles, and other supporting documents to communicate complex and technical information more easily.
- Science illustrator. Work in the service of science, teaching, informing, and fostering understanding of our world. They use a range of visual techniques to communicate science in education, research, public relations, and marketing.

Environmental Policy Analyst. Researches the data, relationships, and policy developments surrounding environmental challenges and proposed solutions. They may work under other job titles such as research associate, advisor, program manager, or regulatory analyst.

Environmental Consultant.When companies make changes in response to environmental regulations, they often rely on environmental consultants to guide their decisions. These individuals provide environmental data for research and development, help raise awareness and collaborate to implement conservation and sustainability practices.

Environmental Lawyer. Environmental lawyers often appear before federal, state, and administrative law courts—representing government agencies, enforcing laws through citizen suits, and challenging agency action in administrative hearings. A distinctive aspect of environmental practice is the role of science in advocacy efforts.

Forensic Scientist/Technician: Forensic scientists and technicians aid criminal investigations by collecting and analyzing evidence. Some work extended or nonstandard hours and travel to crime scenes within their jurisdiction.

Environmental Justice Advocate.Environmental justice is an interdisciplinary field that includes law, political science, economics, public health, urban geography, geoscience, and more.

Pharmaceutical Sales. Pharmaceutical sales reps are employed by either manufacturers or distributors to inform physicians about their products. With key information and insights, they influence providers to prescribe medication to patients who would benefit from them.
- Sales of Scientific Products.
Sell goods for wholesalers or manufacturers where technical or scientific knowledge is required in such areas as biology, engineering, chemistry, and electronics.

Floriculturist. Floriculture spans a wide variety of job roles, including professionals who work in greenhouses, at garden centers and for landscaping companies.

Perfumer. A fragrance creator who focuses on creating high-quality perfumes, often using high-quality and rare combinations of essences to create unique and distinctive scents. These fragrances are targeted to a select group of perfume enthusiasts who appreciate the quality and sophistication of the products.

Atmospheric Scientists. Study, report on, and forecast the weather and climate. Most atmospheric scientists work indoors in weather stations, offices, or laboratories. They may work outdoors to observe the weather.

Meteorologist. Meteorology is the science concerned with the Earth's atmosphere and its physical processes. A meteorologist is a physical scientist who observes, studies, or forecasts the weather.

Astronaut. Artemis Generation astronauts could launch on rockets and spacecraft to live and work aboard the International Space Station. They may also launch aboard the Orion spacecraft in lunar orbit before taking a new human landing system to the Moon’s surface.

Space Research. NASA scientists conduct groundbreaking research across earth science, planetary science, heliophysics and astrophysics to answer some of the most profound questions facing humanity.

Arboriculturist: Work for or with commercial tree service companies, public utility, government agencies landscape maintenance firms, arboreta and botanical gardens.

Agriculture & Food Scientist. Agricultural and food scientists research ways to improve the efficiency and safety of agricultural establishments and products. They work with large scale farms, seed production companies, government agencies, research firms, and environmental organizations.

Horticulturalist. Horticulture is the art, technology, business, education and science of plants. It is the food we eat, the landscapes we live and play in, the environments we thrive in. It is the business of managing and using what we grow, while maintaining the health of our soil, air, and water.

Plant Pathologist. Work to preserve the environment, help grow healthy crops, ensure an adequate food supply, maintain the beauty of ornamental plants, and invent new ways to control plant diseases.

Pharmaceutical Botanist. Works in the pharmaceutical industry to study plant-based medicines and their effects on the human body. They work to develop novel treatments and therapies from plant sources, and also use their knowledge to analyze the safety and thus efficacy of existing treatments.

Environmental Science and Protection Technicians. Monitor the environment and investigate sources of pollution and contamination, including those affecting public health.

Urban/Regional Planners. Develop comprehensive plans and programs for use of land and physical facilities in cities, counties, metropolitan areas, and other jurisdictions.

Landscape Architects. Design parks and other outdoor spaces and can work for local and state government agencies, private and public academic organizations
- Bioengineers and Biomedical Engineers. Bioengineers and biomedical engineers combine engineering principles with sciences to design and create equipment, devices, computer systems, and software.
- Bioinformaticist. Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary field that combines biology, computer science, mathematics, and statistics to analyze and interpret biological data. As a type of Information Research Scientist, they work on the acquisition, storage, analysis, and/or dissemination of biological data.
- Biostatistician. Biostatisticians collect and analyze data for biology and public health purposes using math and statistics. Biostatisticians are critical to advancing groundbreaking research, from medicine to agriculture to public health (more).

Find Your Place in Integrative Biology

Our department has many student organizations and there are more great clubs across Ogden College and WKU including in astronomy, floral design, horticulture, engineering, and computer science, rocketry, design, and meterology. Clubs are a great way to make friends, get involved, and enhance your experience in our department and college!

There are many opportunities to participate in research as an undergraduate student in our department, from lab work to field work, in streams, forests, or savannahs. Our undergrads regularly present at conferences and contribute to new discoveries! Find an EWC lab that matches your interests!

WKU's Hardin Planetarium has full dome of 40 feet, with a 360° surround view by way of a Digitalis Epsilon digital projector. They custom design most shows for public education, and include live interactive performances. You can visit the planetarrium for one of their excellent shows or get involved by volunteering!

BioCoaches are talented upper division students that serve as peer mentors and learning assistants in our introductory courses. Serving in BIOL 120 or BIOL 122 would work for IB students, and you'll receive course credit.
